BJP candidate Devashish Sharma won the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll on Friday with 7,14,349 votes, defeating AIUDF chief Mohammed Badruddin Ajmal by a margin of 1,42,224 votes. Ajmal secured 5,72,125 votes while Congress nominee Sibamoni Bora finished third with 1,29,492 votes.
Counting began at 8 am across two centres under election supervision. The bypoll, held on October 6 across Nagaon and Morigaon districts, recorded a 76.19 per cent turnout with no repoll required. Fifteen candidates contested the seat.
The vacancy arose after sitting MP Pradyut Bordoloi switched from Congress to BJP ahead of the state Assembly elections earlier this year. Sharma, a former Nagaon district commissioner, retired before his nomination.
