The Telangana State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission has ordered Apollo Hospital Enterprises Ltd to pay a total of ₹43,11,876 after finding the hospital liable for medical negligence in the treatment of an acute ischemic stroke patient.
The patient, N. Devender Rao, suffered a stroke on 22 March 2013, was first admitted to Apollo Hospital in Secunderabad, later shifted to its Jubilee Hills facility, remained hospitalized for several months and died on 19 October 2013.

The commission’s judgment highlighted that the hospital failed to administer appropriate care during the critical “golden hour” and that its medical records showed gaps, undocumented medication timing, and missing investigation reports, falling short of standards expected from an internationally accredited institution.
Compensation components included ₹40,11,876 for negligence, ₹1 lakh each for loss of estate and poor record maintenance, ₹50,000 to the widow for loss of consortium, ₹25,000 each to the son and daughter for paternal affection, and ₹25,000 for litigation costs; the hospital must comply within 30 days or face 9% annual interest on the award.
