OpenAI rolled out a ChatGPT add‑in for Microsoft Word on September 17, 2026, integrating the AI directly into the Word interface through a persistent sidebar.

The feature lets users ask the model to draft, summarize, re‑write or re‑format text, generate memos, proposals and executive summaries, and even restructure headings and numbering, with specific edits applied to selected passages.

Access is available to every ChatGPT plan, including the free tier, after installing the add‑in from the Microsoft Marketplace and signing in. Administrators can enable or disable the tool via the ChatGPT admin console, while Microsoft 365 admins must approve the add‑in before employees can use it; default activation begins on October 1, 2026. Complex tables, charts and intricate formatting still require manual adjustment.

Why This Matters

Embedding ChatGPT in Word brings generative AI to one of the most widely used productivity tools, promising faster document creation and reduced manual editing for businesses and individuals. The built‑in admin controls give organisations the ability to govern usage, while the noted limitations remind users that human oversight remains essential to ensure accuracy and proper formatting.
