AI May Not Steal Jobs, but It's Quietly Removing the First Rung of India's Career Ladder

As artificial intelligence spreads through Indian workplaces, fresh graduates face a narrowing pipeline of starter roles. Experts argue apprenticeships must be redesigned and embedded into higher education to rebuild the path from classroom to career.

Artificial intelligence may not yet be triggering mass unemployment in India, but it is steadily dismantling the entry-level positions that have long served as training grounds for young professionals. Tasks once assigned to junior analysts, paralegals, customer service trainees, and coders fresh out of college are now being absorbed by large language models, automated workflows, and AI-powered decision tools. The result is a quieter disruption than the doomsday forecasts predicted: not pink slips, but a thinning of the bottom of the corporate ladder.

The concern goes beyond lost headcount. Entry-level roles are where workers traditionally accumulate domain knowledge, professional judgment, and institutional memory. Without those formative years, the pipeline of mid-level and senior talent could begin to run dry within the next decade. Indian employers, particularly in information technology services, banking, and back-office operations, have been among the fastest adopters of generative AI tools, accelerating the squeeze on junior roles that are highly routinised and amenable to automation.

The authors of the original Economic Times commentary argue that apprenticeships, not just degrees, must become central to India's higher education architecture. They call for structured on-the-job learning embedded inside undergraduate and postgraduate curricula, so that students enter the workforce already carrying practical expertise rather than relying on employers to teach them the basics. Such a shift would require universities, industry bodies, and the government to co-design programmes with measurable skill outcomes, time-bound industry immersion, and clearly defined pathways to permanent employment.

India's demographic dividend makes this redesign urgent. The country adds millions of young workers to its labour force each year, and a growing share holds higher education qualifications. If AI continues to compress the bottom of the career ladder while universities keep producing graduates calibrated for pre-automated workplaces, the mismatch between aspiration and opportunity will widen. Redesigning apprenticeships is being pitched not as a luxury but as a structural fix to keep India's talent engine running in an AI-first economy.

India's global competitiveness in services exports depends on a steady supply of skilled mid-career professionals, not just college degrees. If the apprenticeship layer collapses, the country risks a hollowed workforce that looks qualified on paper but lacks the experiential depth to lead complex projects, manage clients, or supervise AI systems responsibly. This is also a policy question for state governments, which oversee most higher education institutions and vocational training boards.

For employers, the shift could redraw hiring economics. Companies that continue to invest in junior talent pipelines, through structured apprenticeships and AI-augmented training, may gain a long-term advantage in leadership depth. Those that treat entry-level hiring as a cost to be automated away may find themselves, within a decade, unable to fill the senior roles they depend on.
