ECI assigns new symbols to Mamata Banerjee and Arup Roy TMC factions ahead of Oct 6 bypoll

ECI allotted new symbols to Mamata Banerjee’s and Arup Roy’s TMC factions, giving a football player to Mamata’s side and an envelope to Roy’s ahead of the Oct 6 bypoll.

The Election Commission of India on Friday allotted new names and symbols to the rival factions of the Trinamool Congress led by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Arup Roy.

Mamata Banerjee’s faction received the football player symbol, while Arup Roy-led rebels were allotted the envelope symbol.

The decision came a day after the ECI barred both groups from using the party’s original name “All India Trinamool Congress” and its Flowers and Grass symbol, ahead of the October 6 bypoll.

Why This Matters

By assigning distinct symbols—a football player to Mamata Banerjee’s faction and an envelope to Arup Roy’s rebels—the Election Commission provides clear visual identifiers for voters in the upcoming October 6 Trinamool Congress bypoll. The move follows the ECI’s ban on the party’s original name and Flowers and Grass symbol, aiming to reduce confusion and ensure each faction can campaign under a recognized emblem.
