Scientists point to a warming climate as a key factor that has accelerated the melt of Himalayan glaciers over the past decades. Warmer temperatures increase the volume of water stored in high‑altitude glacial lakes, raising the probability of sudden breaches. In Nepal, rapid glacier retreat has been documented across the central and eastern Himalayas, and the Imja‑tsho lake itself has grown markedly since the 1990s. While climate change sets the stage, human actions have amplified the risk. Unregulated construction on riverbanks, deforestation for fuel and agriculture, and inadequate drainage infrastructure have reduced the landscape’s natural ability to absorb heavy rains. Moreover, limited investment in monitoring and early‑warning mechanisms meant that communities received little advance notice of the impending flood.
