The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a Madras High Court decision barring the Tamil Nadu government from granting reservation to those who convert to Islam on the basis of their pre-conversion status.

The ruling prevents converts from claiming reservation benefits linked to the caste or social group they held before changing their religion.

It reinforces the high court's earlier restriction on providing such state-level benefits to individuals after religious conversion.
