Nalgonda consumer triumphs as court orders insurance payout after denied car repair claim

The Nalgonda District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission ordered Royal Sundaram to pay ₹1.43 lakh to homeowner Bonagiri Rani after she was denied reimbursement for June 2019 car repairs.

On September 11, 2026, the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission in Nalgonda delivered its order in Consumer Complaint No. 158 of 2025, directing Royal Sundaram General Insurance Company Ltd to reimburse ₹1.43 lakh to Bonagiri Rani, a 41‑year‑old homemaker from Bhuvanagiri.

Rani’s Maruti Swift Dzire (registration AP‑24‑AW‑9855) was covered by a policy effective from April 12, 2019 to April 11, 2020. She reported that on June 15, 2019, while traveling from Choutuppal to Valigonda, a buffalo entered the road near S Lingotam village, causing her to lose control of the vehicle. After paying ₹1,43,478 for repairs at Varun Motors in Hyderabad, she filed a claim with the insurer, which was subsequently denied.

Royal Sundaram disputed the June 15 accident and questioned the authenticity of the October 14, 2019 repair bill. The insurer pointed to its records of separate incidents on May 9, May 10 and June 19, 2019, for which it had already settled ₹12,772 and ₹16,422 respectively, and asserted that Rani had signed discharge vouchers for those settlements, arguing no further payment was owed.

The commission examined whether the insurer had committed a deficiency in service and whether Rani was entitled to the amounts claimed, ultimately granting her relief for the repair expenses.

Why This Matters

The ruling reinforces insurers' duty to honour legitimate claims under policy terms and demonstrates the effectiveness of India’s consumer redress mechanisms. It signals to policyholders that denial of valid repair costs can be challenged successfully, while urging insurers to maintain transparent documentation and avoid unjust refusals.
