Chief Justice of India Surya Kant told reporters in New Delhi on Thursday that opposition from bar associations had blocked the Supreme Court’s effort to appoint retired judges as ad hoc high court judges, a move intended to battle the pendency of cases currently facing the judiciary.

He stated his bench, including former Chief Justice Bobde and Justice Kaul, had virtually revived the practice of appointing ad hoc judges to address high court case backlogs.

The resistance highlights continued debate over using temporary appointments to alleviate mounting high court caseloads.
