Beijing has officially stripped General Zhao Zongqi, former commander of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Western Theatre Command, of his Chinese Communist Party membership, marking a dramatic disciplinary fall for the senior military officer who directed Chinese troop deployments during the 2017 Doklam standoff and the deadly 2020 Galwan Valley clash along the disputed Line of Actual Control (LAC), according to reporting by The Tribune India.
General Zhao led the PLA’s expansive Western Theatre Command—the massive military zone responsible for overseeing China's entire 3,488-kilometer land border with India—through the most volatile period in bilateral relations in four decades. The disciplinary action was formally confirmed by the Standing Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), which also announced the removal of two other high-ranking officers from central military leadership bodies.
While Chinese official state media cited general disciplinary and anti-corruption violations common in internal Party investigations, international defense analysts observe that the purge comes amidst ongoing diplomatic deliberations and Corps Commander-level military negotiations between New Delhi and Beijing aimed at resolving lingering friction points in Eastern Ladakh.
Strategic experts note that Zhao was widely regarded as a hawkish frontline commander who championed forward posturing and aggressive infrastructure construction in sensitive border sectors.
