In a major coordinated security sweep inside the Central Prison at Parappana Agrahara, the Bengaluru City Police and state prison vigilance personnel seized multiple illicit mobile phones, SIM cards, and electronic contraband, leading to the registration of criminal cases and the arrest of nine individuals, according to reporting by Deccan Herald.
The early-morning joint raid, conducted across high-security barracks and general inmate quarters, uncovered several smart devices and feature phones concealed inside false floor tiles, ventilation ducts, and sanitary plumbing lines. Preliminary forensic examination revealed that several incarcerated organized crime operatives and undertrial prisoners had been utilizing the contraband communication devices to coordinate extortion rackets and communicate with outside criminal syndicates.
Bengaluru police investigators subsequently arrested nine individuals, including outside facilitators and prison staff members suspected of colluding with inmates to smuggle electronic hardware past entrance security checkpoints. Police registered formal complaints under relevant sections of the Karnataka Prisons Act and criminal conspiracy provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The discovery has prompted the Karnataka Home Department to order a comprehensive audit of prison physical infrastructure. Prison authorities confirmed plans to upgrade non-linear junction detectors, install full-body electronic scanners at facility gates, and deploy advanced multi-frequency mobile signal jammers to neutralize unauthorized wireless communications within the perimeter.
