The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has finalized plans to implement a structured paid-parking system across 20 high-traffic commercial corridors in central Bengaluru, including major retail stretches along Commercial Street, Sampige Road, and surrounding shopping districts.
The first phase of the municipal parking initiative follows a competitive tender process in which private management agencies were selected to operate parking zones, install automated ticketing kiosks, deploy CCTV surveillance, and clearly demarcate vehicle bays. Under the approved tariff schedule, two-wheelers will be charged ₹15 per hour, while four-wheeler parking will cost ₹30 per hour.
Civic authorities project that the initial 20-road network will generate approximately ₹3 crore in annual municipal revenue, providing a non-tax revenue stream to support local road maintenance and civic infrastructure upgrades. The remaining 80 commercial corridors originally designated for the paid-parking framework will be re-tendered in upcoming phases to expand coverage across peripheral commercial hubs.
While civic officials acknowledge past operational challenges and potential friction between motorists and field attendants, the BBMP emphasized that sensor-assisted monitoring, digital payment integration, and standardized fee displays will curb unregulated roadside parking, improve pedestrian accessibility, and alleviate chronic traffic congestion across Bengaluru's core commercial zones.
