During a closed‑door security briefing earlier this month, Israeli Army Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir told Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz that Hamas had suffered a military defeat and that the confrontation with the group was effectively over, an Israeli newspaper reported.
The briefing was held as senior army commanders visited the Gaza Strip to review intelligence assessments of Hamas’s current capabilities and activity.

An intelligence official warned that Hamas was showing signs of trying to regain influence and re‑establish control, noting the group still posed a security threat despite recent strikes. Zamir said the assessments reflected Hamas’s intentions rather than its actual operational capacity.
