Federal Grant Fuels Idaho University’s Free Drought‑Planning Tools for Irrigators

The U.S. Department of Agriculture awarded a rapid‑response grant to the University of Idaho to build free, web‑based decision tools that help farmers and water managers plan planting and crop choices under limited water conditions.

The USDA’s rapid‑response grant program has allocated funds to the University of Idaho’s College of Agricultural and Life Sciences to develop an online suite of drought‑planning tools. Researchers will create a publicly accessible platform that aggregates real‑time hydrologic data, climate forecasts, and agronomic models to guide irrigators in making planting and crop‑management decisions when water supplies are constrained.

The tools will allow users to input field‑level information—such as soil type, irrigation infrastructure, and crop preferences—and receive scenario‑based recommendations that balance water availability with expected yields. By leveraging satellite‑derived moisture indices and state water‑right databases, the system aims to provide actionable insights for both small‑scale family farms and larger commercial operations across the Pacific Northwest.

Development is slated to begin this quarter, with a beta version slated for field testing on select farms in the Snake River basin later in the year. The university is partnering with the Idaho Department of Water Resources and several regional water‑user associations to validate model outputs and ensure the platform aligns with existing water‑allocation policies.
