Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) has rolled out updated Mac Mini and Mac Studio desktops configured around on-device artificial intelligence, according to CNBC. The launch marks the company's most concrete desktop bet yet on running AI workloads locally rather than in the cloud, a strategic posture that distinguishes Apple from rivals who lean more heavily on remote servers.
The Mac Mini headlines the refresh. It can be configured with Apple's new M6 chip, the company's first processor manufactured on a 2-nanometer process, or alternatively with an M5 Pro variant. Pricing has shifted upward: the entry-level Mac Mini now starts at $899, compared with $799 for the prior generation, a $100 increase Apple is bundling with the silicon upgrade.

The Mac Studio, Apple's higher-end desktop aimed at creative professionals and developers, has also been updated with newer chips tuned for AI tasks. Apple has not positioned the Studio as a replacement for workstations from rivals like HP or Dell, but rather as a tightly integrated machine where the company's own silicon and macOS are engineered together to handle demanding inference and creative workloads on-device.
The push reflects Apple's broader thesis that privacy, latency, and cost advantages favor running AI models directly on user hardware. By designing chips specifically for AI matrix operations and pairing them with macOS, Apple is signaling that it sees the desktop, not just the iPhone, as central to its long-term AI roadmap. The 2-nanometer manufacturing node, supplied by Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, also positions Apple among the first PC makers to ship chips built on that advanced process.
For enterprise buyers, creative studios, and software developers, the refresh raises the bar for what an AI-ready desktop looks like. Competitors in the Windows ecosystem, including Dell, HP, and Lenovo, have so far paired Qualcomm, Intel, and AMD processors with discrete GPUs from Nvidia to chase similar workloads, while offering machines across a wider price band.
