India’s Reservoir Live Storage Drops to 68% of Capacity, South Region Hit Hard

The Central Water Commission’s latest bulletin shows live storage in Indian reservoirs fell to 125.3 billion cubic metres, just 67.8% of total capacity, a steep decline from last year’s 153.1 bcm, with the southern states recording the sharpest fall.

The Central Water Commission (CWC) released its reservoir storage bulletin for the period ending 27 August 2026, revealing a worrying contraction in water availability across the country. Live storage – the volume of water that can be drawn for irrigation, drinking, and power generation – stood at 125.299 billion cubic metres (bcm), representing only 67.83% of the combined live storage capacity of all major reservoirs. By comparison, the same period last year recorded 153.083 bcm, indicating a loss of roughly 27.8 bcm, or 18% of the previous year’s volume.

The bulletin highlights regional disparities. While the northern region retained a larger share of its storage, the southern region experienced a pronounced drop, with several key reservoirs in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh falling well below the 70% threshold. In some basins, live storage dipped to the low‑50s percent, prompting concerns over water security for the upcoming agricultural season. The CWC’s data also shows that overall inflows have been below long‑term averages, reflecting a weaker monsoon in the central and western zones.

The decline comes at a time when India’s water demand is projected to rise sharply due to population growth, expanding urban consumption, and increased hydro‑electric generation. The shortfall threatens not only irrigation schedules but also the operational capacity of major hydro‑power plants, potentially affecting the national grid during peak summer months. State water ministries are already issuing advisories to prioritize water use and explore supplemental sources such as groundwater and rainwater harvesting.
