A recent peer‑reviewed study in the International Journal of Social Impact has highlighted a pressing public‑health issue in the Kashmir Valley: families residing near apple orchards are experiencing significantly higher levels of pesticide exposure than those living farther away. The research, conducted by a team of environmental health scientists from a local university in collaboration with international partners, surveyed 200 households across the districts of Pulwama, Anantnag and Baramulla. Using dust samples from homes, water testing and limited biomonitoring of residents, the investigators detected residues of organophosphate and pyrethroid chemicals commonly used in apple cultivation. The concentrations were notably higher in homes located within a 500‑metre radius of the orchards, suggesting drift and runoff as primary pathways of contamination.
Apple farming is a cornerstone of Kashmir’s economy, accounting for a large share of the region’s agricultural exports and providing livelihoods for thousands of small‑holder farmers. To protect yields, growers often rely on intensive pesticide regimes, especially during the blossom and fruit‑setting stages. While these chemicals boost production, the study warns that the lack of adequate protective measures—such as buffer zones, proper spraying techniques, and community awareness—has resulted in unintended exposure for nearby residents, particularly women and children who spend more time indoors where dust accumulates.

The authors call for immediate policy interventions, including stricter regulation of pesticide application, promotion of integrated pest management (IPM) practices, and regular health monitoring of affected communities. They also recommend that local authorities facilitate training programs for farmers on safer pesticide handling and encourage the adoption of less hazardous alternatives where feasible.
