In a major administrative overhaul, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has officially announced plans for a modern, integrated Secretariat and Legislative Assembly complex in Chennai. The ambitious state project carries a projected outlay of Rs 1,200 crore and will relocate the core seat of executive governance and lawmaking away from the historic Fort St George premises.
The decision to shift out of Fort St George comes as part of a strategic push to streamline public administration and upgrade state infrastructure. The colonial-era fort has served as the administrative epicenter of Tamil Nadu for generations, but its age, spatial limitations, and heritage status have created significant logistical challenges for accommodating expanded bureaucratic departments and high-tech administrative tools.

To address these challenges, the Vijay administration is planning a green-building compliant facility that incorporates modern architectural design, energy-efficient infrastructure, and optimized workspaces.
