Police authorities in Mumbai are investigating the reported theft of gold jewellery and foreign currency valued at over Rs 2.28 crore from a Surat-based textile trader outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
Details of the Incident
According to a report by Kashmir Observer, the incident occurred shortly after the trader arrived in Mumbai on a commercial flight from Dubai:
- Stolen valuables: The victim reported the theft of approximately 1.5 kilograms of gold ornaments valued at around Rs 1.95 crore, along with AED 1.28 lakh in cash (equivalent to approximately Rs 33.35 lakh).
- Location: The theft reportedly took place within the airport terminal transit or pickup zone as the trader was preparing to board ground transport back to Gujarat.
Ongoing Police Investigation
Local police, in coordination with Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) airport security teams, have initiated an inquiry into the matter:
- Investigators are reviewing CCTV surveillance footage from terminal exit gates, parking structures, and departure corridors.
- Officers are examining whether the trader was tracked by an organized gang from overseas or targeted upon exiting the customs inspection area.
- As of the preliminary report, no formal arrests have been announced as verification of statements and tracking of suspect movements continue.
