The Mumbai Police Commissionerate has issued a prohibitory order on October 28, invoking Section 163 of the Bombay Nagar Suburban Safety (BNSS) Act, 2023, that bans the release of flying lanterns throughout the city from October 31 through November 29, coinciding with Diwali 2026. The directive applies to the whole jurisdiction of the Mumbai Police Commissionerate.

Authorities warned that lanterns pose fire hazards, can damage property and endanger lives. Residents and businesses have been asked to observe the restriction to avoid potential accidents during the festival period. The ban aims to safeguard public safety throughout the month‑long celebration.
