The second day of Durga Puja in Kolkata was overshadowed by a deadly stampede the night before that claimed 19 lives, including a seven-year-old child. As bereaved families collected bodies from morgues, the city grappled with profound loss while authorities prepared emergency responses.

The Chief Minister has ordered sweeping safety reforms, convening a high-level committee to inspect compliance across all venues. Simultaneously, police have arrested seven suspects, including organisers of the Chorbagan Durga Puja, in connection with the incident. The committee's findings will guide immediate corrective actions and long-term policy changes.
