The upcoming negotiations follow statewide memorandums submitted by the Karnataka State Hamali Workers Federation, highlighting that rising essential commodity prices and living expenses have severely eroded workers' real incomes. Hamali workers perform arduous physical labor—including loading, unloading, weighing, and stacking heavy agricultural produce sacks across state Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs) and government grain godowns.
Union representatives are pressing for a 25% upward revision in standard per-bag handling rates, timely settlement of weighing charges, and the formal implementation of welfare board programs providing health insurance, disability compensation, and educational scholarships for workers' children under the Unorganised Workers' Social Security Act.
State APMC administrators acknowledged the vital contribution of headload laborers in maintaining agricultural supply chain continuity, confirming that market committee chairpersons, trade representatives, and union leaders will work toward a fair, binding wage revision settlement before the peak post-monsoon harvest arrival season begins.
