The Atmospheric Unit (AU) of the Indian research network has placed its Coastal Atmospheric Research and Tracking (C-ART) facility under a comprehensive review, officials said on Wednesday. The station, set up as part of the Ministry of External Affairs’ Mission Mausam, was commissioned to collect high‑resolution atmospheric data along the Bay of Bengal coastline. The review comes after the facility has been operational for more than a year, during which it has amassed a continuous stream of meteorological observations intended to improve understanding of regional weather dynamics.
India’s eastern coast is prone to rapid cyclogenesis, erratic monsoon bursts, and sea‑surface temperature fluctuations that can disrupt agriculture, fisheries, and maritime traffic. Accurate, real‑time data from coastal stations like C-ART are therefore critical for early warning systems and for refining numerical weather prediction models. The C-ART suite includes automated weather stations, lidar wind profilers, and ocean‑atmosphere flux sensors, all calibrated to capture parameters such as wind speed, humidity, temperature gradients, and aerosol concentrations.

A technical panel comprising scientists from the Ministry of Earth Sciences and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology conducted the review. Their mandate covered data quality assurance, instrumentation reliability, and the integration of C-ART outputs with the national forecasting framework. Preliminary findings indicate that the facility has delivered a robust dataset with minimal gaps, but the panel highlighted the need for enhanced data transmission bandwidth and periodic calibration of lidar units to sustain long‑term accuracy.
The review’s conclusions are expected to shape the next phase of Mission Mausam’s coastal monitoring strategy. Authorities are considering scaling the C-ART model to additional vulnerable stretches of the eastern shoreline, thereby creating a denser observational network. Incorporating C-ART’s high‑frequency measurements into the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecasting models could sharpen cyclone track predictions and improve rainfall forecasts for the monsoon season, directly benefiting disaster‑prone districts and the shipping industry.
Stakeholders, including state disaster management agencies and the Ministry of Shipping, have welcomed the review as a step toward data‑driven decision‑making.
