Major commercial lenders in India, including State Bank of India (SBI), HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, and Punjab National Bank (PNB), will observe physical branch closures for up to four days during the week of September 14 to September 20, 2026, with exact non-working days determined by state-specific schedules under the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday calendar.
According to notifications issued under the Negotiable Instruments Act, bank holidays vary significantly across circles and municipal jurisdictions. Branch operations in several major financial centers, including Mumbai, New Delhi, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Ahmedabad, will be closed on September 16 or September 17 in observance of Milad-un-Nabi (Eid-e-Milad), alongside regional festival observances in specific states. When combined with regular weekly closures, branches in select regions will be unavailable for in-person transactions for up to four days during the seven-day period.
Customers planning in-person banking activities—such as cash deposits, demand draft issuances, locker access, or physical cheque clearances—are advised to verify their local branch schedule on the official RBI portal or their respective bank's mobile application before visiting.
The Reserve Bank of India clarified that digital banking channels will experience zero disruption. Online net banking, mobile banking applications, Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transaction rails, and automated teller machine (ATM) networks will remain fully operational nationwide throughout the holiday window to handle electronic fund transfers and retail transactions.
