BELGRADE – An assailant armed with knives attacked a police officer guarding the Israeli Embassy just after midnight on Wednesday, police said. The officer, from an elite unit, responded by fatally shooting the attacker. The attack was the first of its kind near the diplomatic mission in recent memory. The incident unfolded at the embassy’s perimeter, prompting an immediate security response.
Serbia’s Interior Minister Ivica Dacic confirmed the shooting and said police were treating the episode as a terrorist attack. He added that investigators were securing the scene and reviewing any potential links. No further casualties were reported, and the embassy’s staff remain unharmed.
