India has launched a Rs 400 crore annual initiative to embed artificial intelligence across its modern warfare capabilities, reflecting the growing importance of AI in battlefield data analysis and the deployment of military-grade autonomous drones that can hunt targets without human input.

Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani cautioned that human involvement remains crucial and that the armed forces must implement strong safeguards while deploying AI, noting that several countries have heavily invested in integrating AI into their military infrastructure. The initiative seeks to modernize warfare while preserving human oversight. General Subramani emphasized that safeguards are essential for responsible AI use.
