MITRA, a non‑profit focused on community development, disclosed on September 10 that it will roll out seven distinct initiatives with a combined budget of RM59.76 million. The programmes are designed to empower members of the Indian diaspora in Malaysia through education grants, vocational training, and start‑up incubation.
The flagship component is a scholarship fund that will award up to 500 university students from Indian‑heritage families with RM10,000 each, covering tuition and living expenses for the 2024‑25 academic year. A parallel skill‑development track will partner with technical institutes to deliver certified courses in digital marketing, renewable energy technology and advanced manufacturing, targeting 2,000 participants over the next two years.

MITRA’s entrepreneurship arm will allocate RM15 million to a seed‑capital pool, offering low‑interest loans and mentorship to 150 Indian‑owned start‑ups seeking to scale operations in sectors such as fintech, agritech and e‑commerce. The organisation also announced a mentorship network linking seasoned Indian business leaders in Malaysia with emerging entrepreneurs.
In addition to education and business support, the plan includes a health‑and‑wellness outreach that will fund community clinics in three states with a RM5 million budget, and a cultural preservation grant of RM2 million to sponsor festivals, language classes and heritage projects. The final initiative focuses on digital inclusion, providing 10,000 low‑cost tablets and broadband vouchers to under‑privileged Indian households.
MITRA’s chief executive, Ramanan, said the multi‑pronged approach reflects the community’s diverse needs and aims to create a sustainable pipeline of talent and economic activity. The organisation will monitor progress through quarterly reports and an independent audit, with the first disbursements slated for October.
