Mirzapur: The Movie soundtrack pioneers Universal’s ‘Hear It First’ model

The soundtrack of Mirzapur: The Movie has been released under Excel Music as the first Bollywood album to use Universal Music India’s ‘Hear It First’ initiative, giving premium streaming subscribers early access before a wider rollout.

Excel Entertainment has unveiled the complete soundtrack of Mirzapur: The Movie, marking the first time a Bollywood film album will be released through Universal Music India’s ‘Hear It First’ model. The album, issued on the newly created Excel Music label, will be available exclusively to premium music‑streaming subscribers for an initial period before opening to all listeners on ad‑supported tiers.

The move comes as the Mirzapur franchise, which has built a massive following over three critically acclaimed digital seasons, prepares its biggest transition yet – a theatrical release on 4 September 2026. The film reunites the core cast – Pankaj Tripathi, Ali Fazal, Divyenndu, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Rasika Dugal, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Abhishek Banerjee – while adding fan‑favorite Jitendra Kumar (Jeetu Bhaiya) and newcomer Ravi Kishan to expand the gritty world of the eponymous Uttar Pradesh town.

Under the ‘Hear It First’ initiative, paying subscribers on major Indian music platforms will hear the Mirzapur tracks ahead of the general public, a strategy designed to reward premium users and strengthen the paid music ecosystem. “Building a stronger paid music ecosystem is important for the long‑term growth of the Indian music industry,” said Vishal Ramchandani, CEO of Excel Entertainment. “‘Hear It First’ gives fans another reason to subscribe while creating greater value for artists, labels and the entire ecosystem.”

Industry observers see the partnership as a test case for how film music can drive subscription growth. By positioning a high‑profile soundtrack as an exclusive early‑access product, Excel Music hopes to attract new paying users and set a precedent for other Bollywood productions. The model also promises higher royalty yields for composers and singers, aligning financial incentives with the premium‑subscriber base.

In addition to the music launch, the studio has announced a series of fan‑engagement activities, including a Mirzapur Hotline where the original cast will answer audience questions ahead of the cinema debut. These promotional pushes aim to sustain buzz through the weeks leading up to the 4 September release, leveraging both the soundtrack’s exclusive rollout and the franchise’s established fan community.

Why This Matters

The early‑access model signals a shift in how Indian film music is monetised, moving away from the traditional free‑to‑all release on television and YouTube toward a tiered streaming approach. By tying a blockbuster soundtrack to premium subscriptions, studios can generate a new revenue stream that supports higher production budgets and better compensation for creators.

For the broader music industry, the experiment could accelerate the growth of paid streaming in a market still dominated by ad‑supported services. If successful, other film houses may adopt similar strategies, reshaping the economics of Bollywood’s music publishing and potentially influencing global practices for soundtrack distribution.
