The recent deluge across Maharashtra has poured an estimated 302 billion cubic feet (tmcft) into the Almatti reservoir, the largest single gain among Krishna basin dams, according to the Karnataka Water Resources Department.
In contrast, the Krishnarajasagara (KRS) and Cauvery basin reservoirs are holding less water than the same period last year, despite ongoing downstream releases mandated by inter‑state water-sharing agreements and court orders.

State officials say the disparity reflects uneven monsoon distribution, with Maharashtra receiving above‑average rainfall while Karnataka's catchment areas remain comparatively dry, prompting concerns over irrigation, hydro‑electric generation and compliance with legal water commitments.
