The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi has posted a significant leap in the 2026 India Today-MDRA Rankings, securing the 7th spot among technical universities and ranking 11th overall among engineering colleges nationwide. The institute’s ascent marks a notable shift in the competitive landscape of higher‑education engineering institutions in India.
The rankings, compiled by India Today in partnership with the Market Development Research Association (MDRA), evaluate institutions across parameters such as faculty quality, research output, industry collaboration, infrastructure, and placement records. IIT Mandi’s improved scores in these categories propelled it past several long‑standing rivals, positioning it as an emerging leader in the sector.

Director Prof. R. K. Singh attributed the achievement to a coordinated effort by faculty, students, and alumni. "Our collective commitment to academic excellence, research innovation, and societal impact has driven this progress," he said in a statement released by the institute. He added that the institute is now focusing on aligning its curricula and research agendas with global standards while continuing to serve regional development goals.
The institute’s recent initiatives include expanding its research labs, forging new industry partnerships, and launching interdisciplinary programs that blend engineering with emerging fields such as renewable energy and artificial intelligence. These steps have not only boosted its research citations but also improved placement outcomes, with a higher percentage of graduates securing roles in top multinational firms.
Analysts note that IIT Mandi’s rise reflects a broader trend of newer IITs gaining ground on older, more established campuses. The institute’s strategic investments in faculty recruitment, student entrepreneurship support, and alumni engagement are seen as key drivers behind its rapid climb in the rankings.
