Kerala Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala has called for amendments that would make the NDPS Act more stringent, seeking tougher punishment for drug peddlers. His appeal targets the severity of penalties available under the law as a central measure for addressing drug peddling.

Chennithala also asked Union Home Minister Amit Shah to convene a meeting of the Centre and states to work towards a drug-free India. The request places the Union government and state governments in the same forum, pairing proposed legislative reform with coordinated action on a shared national objective.
